Scrub on Dune Ridge, Mountains, White Sands National Park
What do you remember about a place as vast and stunning as White Sands National Park. Do you remember the exact number of Soap Tree Yuccas that are growing between two large dunes? Do you remember the shapes and lines of where the sands meet the mountains and the mountains meet the sky? When I have taken straight photographs that delineate those objects and planes I have often felt a little empty with the final image.
It may end up as a clean, sharp beautiful image, but it only becomes a window into the split second the image was taken. Lately I have been more comfortable with the blurring of lines and colors in my photographs. The softening of the large picture while still holding the sharpness of small details is a visual metaphor for moving through the park, passing through time and transiting though life. The images become more than a frozen instant, they trigger the sensations and memories of the experience and they become White Sands Perceptions.
