As a photographer you never know when someone is going to show up at your door with a face you can’t resist to photograph. That was Bennet Garcia, a contractor who was working on the commercial property where my studio is located.
I felt the best place to photograph Bennet would be in his own element; the construction zone of the commercial property. The room is sheet rocked, but unpainted. The ceiling is damaged and has little insulation. A new floor needs to be laid down and there was a table and construction equipment located on one side of the unfinished storefront.
We had about ten minutes, so I sat Bennet down in chair facing the large window providing the ambient light that I used as my fill light. On camera right I placed a Godox V860 in a 12”x47” inch strip box with a honey comb grid at a 45 degree angle. For this photo I had Ben turn away from the main light.
I captured Bennet’s intense stare which was highlighted by his dark sweatshirt, the rough, darkened unfinished background, with the main light shaping the broad side of his face. We got a few great photos in that short 10 minutes, but this one seemed to the moment at our best.
